About Us

Woods Hardware & Furniture Company was founded in 1961 by Hal Woods, Jr. The store was in the building now occupied by Once Upon a Time Antiques. Hal Woods had a background as a traveling hardware salesman, and hardware was what he loved. But Hal soon discovered, with the help and encouragement of his wife Ernestine, that furniture was a more glamorous sale. Their furniture and appliance business grew and prospered thanks in large part to Woods dedication to customer service and Hal's unique marketing ability. On the occasion of the 7th anniversary of Woods in 1968, Hal advertised automatic washers for $177.77. If that were not deal enough, Woods included a seven year supply of laundry detergent with every washer purchased!

The store moved across the street into the current location in 1970 and continued to grow. The new building was designed and built for hardware and furniture under one roof.

Benny Wood came to work for Hal and Ernestine Woods in 1963. Benny had a military background and some sales experience in retail clothing. The furniture business became a passion for Benny and he soon convinced his wife Lois to leave her job at Scovill and join the growing Woods staff. In the late 1960's a second Woods location was opened in Cornelia. With two stores growing and going, and Hal and Ernestine heavily involved in other businesses, Benny and Lois Wood purchased the stores from Hal and Ernestine Woods in 1976.

In the years that followed, Benny and Lois focused more on the furniture and appliance business and less on hardware until the hardware business was eventually closed. Benny's tragic death in 1990 left the stores in the now experienced hands of his wife Lois. Their son Danny managed the Cornelia location. Both locations prospered under the leadership of Lois Wood. Tragedy struck again and cancer took the life of Danny Wood. Lois closed the Cornelia location and concentrated her ability in Clarkesville.

After fifteen years as President of Woods, Lois made the decision to sell the business to Mike & Sherry Callahan. Mike enjoyed a successful career of thirty-two years as a furniture manufacturer's representative. The Woods store was in fact one of the many accounts that he serviced in his work making 5 or six visits to the store every year. Sherry enjoyed a 16 year career as a state executive with Special Olympics Virginia before joining Mike in the rep business.

Everything fit. Sherry brings the people and customer service skills that are vital to the successful operation of a retail store. Mike brings over thirty years of furniture experience. Together they make a great team. Lois knew both of them, trusted them both, and was comfortable selling the business to Mike & Sherry Callahan. The employees at Woods were sad to see Lois leave, but they were ready and willing to stay at Woods and continue the tradition of service to the loyal Woods customers in Northeast Georgia.
